Marc O. Mayer ’83

Mr. Mayer is a partner and the CEO of GMO LLC, a privately owned institutional investment manager with over $100 billion in assets. He joined GMO, where he also sits on the board of directors, in 2009, after 20 years at AllianceBernstein L.P., an investment manager with over $500 billion in assets, and its predecessor, the privately owned Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Inc.
Mr. Mayer began at Sanford Bernstein in 1989 as a pharmaceuticals securities analyst. He went on to be a research director, head of the institutional research business, head of institutional investments, head of retail investments, president and director of AllianceBernstein mutual funds and chief investment officer for asset allocation. He was also a partner and a member of the company’s board of directors.
Prior to joining Sanford Bernstein, Mr. Mayer worked at the Squibb Corporation for six years in strategic planning, business development, marketing and marketing research.
Mr. Mayer holds a BA in philosophy from Yale and an MBA from Columbia Business School. After college, Mr. Mayer worked as a concert and record producer. In addition to serving on Columbia Business School’s Board of Overseers, Mr. Mayer is a trustee or director of the following organizations: Saint Ann’s School, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Faces at NYU (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures), the Insured Retirement Institute and the American Friends of Hebrew University.
