Physiological Equipment and Data Analysis Session with Biopac

This workshop featured thorough training on using physiology research tools by a consultant from Biopac, the leading company in physiology data collection hardware and software. During the session audience members received in-depth, detailed instructions on how to set up and collect different types of physiological data. A volunteer was hooked up to the various recording equipment to provide a real-time example of how the equipment works, how to troubleshoot problems, and how to analyze data collected. The following physiological measures and their corresponding equipment were discussed:

  1. ECG (Electrocardiogram): Uses electrodes placed on the skin to record the electrical activity of the heart.
  2. Facial EMG (Electromyography): Uses electrodes placed on the face to amplify general and skeletal muscle electrical activity.
  3. GSR/EDA (Galvanic skin response/Electrodermal activity): Electrodes placed on the fingers or arm send out electrical pulses and measure the amount of moisture in the skin.
  4. PPG (Photoplethysmograph): Uses a small amplifier placed on a finger to emit an infared light and produce a measure of blood pressure and blood density.
