Academic Program Development

Overview

Due to the strength, reputation and experience of its full-time faculty, Columbia University is a leader in global business education and public policy. The Columbia CIBER brings together the extensive resources of Columbia Business School and the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) to enhance the University’s offerings in international business education.

Master’s Degree Programs

The Columbia CIBER supports curriculum innovation in the MIA program and the MBA program, increasing international content in the core curriculum and elective courses. SIPA’s International Finance and Policy Program and Columbia Business School’s International Business Concentration provide students with the opportunity to focus on international business within their degree programs.

Students who are interested in studying international business in greater depth may apply to the dual degree program, which allows them to complete both the MBA and MIA degrees in just three years.

Columbia Business School’s Executive MBA (EMBA) programs transform promising executives into global business leaders. The Executive MPA program trains professionals to be competent and sophisticated public managers by incorporating broad questions of public affairs and the specific analytic, managerial, and communication skills of management and policy analysis into the curriculum.

Doctoral Programs

Both SIPA and Columbia Business School offer doctoral degree programs focusing on international business and economics. These programs develop leaders in scholarship and teaching who will extend international business learning to future generations.

Curriculum Development and Innovative Classes

The Columbia CIBER supports development of case studies in cooperation with the Columbia CaseWorks program at Columbia Business School as well as curriculum innovation through internationally focused classes.

Each year, new and exciting international classes are added to the elective roster. Master Classes are hands-on, project-based electives designed to challenge second-year MBA students to master core concepts by applying them to contemporary business problems. One of the most exciting classes in the master class program is Private Equity and Entrepreneurship in Africa, which matches students with consultants in Africa whom they can travel to meet with at the end of the semester.

In the 2008-09 academic year, the Business School launched the Global Immersion Program. These classes meet several times in New York before visiting a destination for one week of meetings and business visits.

Global Business Project

The Global Business Project provides MBAs from premier business schools the extraordinary opportunity to work in co-located and virtual teams on real business issues facing multinationals or local companies while improving their language skills. Students from Columbia Business School may participate along with students from nine other partner schools. Projects and teams are chosen through a competitive application process in the fall. Project work begins with a kick-off meeting of teams and their supervisors in Washington D.C. in March and students work virtually on their projects through April and on the ground in the destination country in May. The project is comprised of strategically-oriented projects based in destination countries, which include Brazil, China, Japan and Poland for 2009. Teams are guided in their predeparture and on-the ground work by business and business language faculty from participating schools as well as senior managers at the company. An information session will be held during the fall term. For additional details, please click here to visit the official program website.
